Food and Your Mental Health

The last two days I have been attending a certification in Nutrition and Mental Health. This is a passion of mine. One of the reason that I am currently pursuing my certification in Health Coaching because I have seen, first hand, the power that food has over mental health. When I changed my diet I was able to realize that I was in control of my health and well being. The anxiety that I had suffered from for as long I remembered was under control.

This seminar has just helped to reiterate that good nutrition is essential for mental stability but the main thing that I got out of the seminar is that most things that ail you can be fixed through sleep, nutrition, exercise and community. This is not to say that at certain people don't need other interventions but that it is always important to pay attention to the things listed above.

I believe that this is a good way to look at things and try not to over think it. Eat the highest quality whole foods (foods that aren't in a package) that you can afford, move your body, get 7-9 hours of sleep a night and hang out with friends and family. If we could just focus on these things we all would be much healthier.

I know that time is a huge issue for all us but maybe we need to take a step back and think about what is really important. We are all going to have days that getting these four things in will be almost impossible but if we can make them a priority and focus on them consistently the results would be well worth.

How can you start incorporating better foods, more movement, longer sleep and community into your life?
